To celebrate Small Business Saturday, we have been catching up with BIDs around the country on how they are supporting their small businesses in the lead up to Christmas. There are many ways you can get involved and support Small Business Saturday and you can find more information here.
Below is our second blog from Helen Holdsworth, Project Manager and Brighouse BID.
Brighouse has many different and interesting independent shops, proud shop owners, and you always get service with a smile. Sadly, like every town centre, they’ve had a tough couple of years – and so this weekend and throughout December, our job is to increase footfall in our town and into their shops.
We’re bringing some Christmas magic to our high street through street entertainment. We’ve got themed characters including snow queens, ice fairies, toy soldiers and even Father Christmas himself on stilts interacting with the public. It’s proving a popular way to bring families into our town and get them inside our fantastic independents.
We’ve printed a town-wide Christmas gift guide. Some 10,000 copies are going out to local homes which will help raise awareness of the incredible offer our town has.
And we’ve crammed our own BID office window with about 30 prizes from local retailers including vouchers and afternoon tea. Passers-by can scan our QR code in the window with a chance of winning the entire window – over £500 in prizes. It’s a mini showcase of what’s available from our small and independent businesses.
Local businesses are optimistic right now. We have a buoyant town centre with very few empty premises. We have benefited from the new world of hybrid working, those working from home are using our high street more.
But we need to keep the local high street at the forefront of people’s mind, and that’s where initiatives like Small Business Saturday are crucial. We need to remind people they can get everything locally, and support local livelihoods in the process.
