Launch of the Great British High Street Awards 2018

Jake Berry MPMinister for the Northern Powerhouse and Local Growth has announced the Great British High Street Awards for 2018:

Launch of the Great British High Street Awards 2018

Dear Colleague,

I am pleased to share with you that the Communities Secretary, the Rt Hon James Brokenshire MP today launched the opening of the Great British High Street Awards and I wanted to write to you to tell you more about the Awards.

As High Streets Minister, I know that high streets across Great Britain and Northern Ireland would not be what they are without the efforts of dedicated local people and small businesses. These awards are a chance for you to celebrate and showcase the dedicated individuals, community groups and business leaders across your constituency.

The Great British High Street Awards began in 2014. The Awards are back for 2018 and with support from yourself, our lead sponsor Visa as well as other partners, we plan for it to be bigger and better than ever!

Entrants to the Awards are in with a chance to win up to £10,000 to spend on their community, plus on-the-ground support and events from the campaign street teams. There is also the opportunity for their retailers, small businesses and the public to participate in a spend and win competition supported by Visa.

Winners will be named in each of the four UK nations – England, Scotland, Wales and, for the first time, Northern Ireland. There are two categories: Champion High Street, which will recognise the nation’s best high streets, and the Rising Star category which will recognise the nation’s most ambitious high streets, places which are taking the lead and working together to regenerate, adapt and diversify. An overall High Street of the Year in Great Britain and Northern Ireland will also be named.

The key dates for the Awards are as follows:

  • 20 June – Great British High Street Awards Launch
  • w/c 16 July – The ‘Great British High Street Week’ with cross-departmental engagement
  • 22 August – Entries close
  • 10 September – Shortlist announced
  • 31 October – Voting closes and judges’ visits
  • November – Winners announced at awards ceremony.

We want local MPs to be champions of their local high street and I would encourage you to work with one of your local associations who can enter on behalf of your constituency. These include: Business Improvement Districts, Local Authorities, Parish Councils, Town Teams, Coastal Community Teams, Town Centre Partnerships, Community Interest Companies, Chambers of Commerce and Trading Associations.

This year, for the first time, we will be holding a dedicated Great British High Street week during week commencing 16 July. During this week I would encourage you to visit your local high street and town centre to mark Great British High Street week and raise awareness of the Awards. My officials are coordinating activity for this week so if you are planning to visit your high street I would welcome your offices contacting them via greatbritishhighstreet@communities.gsi.gov.uk. I will also be hosting a parliamentary reception on Wednesday 18 July, with further details to follow.

More information about the Awards can be found via our website at The Great British High Street We have also created a dedicated microsite just for MPs. This site can help you lead and shape your high streets local campaign. It gives you access to all of our campaign information and social media resources in one place. More information can be found at: thegreatbritishhighstreet.co.uk

Good luck!

British BIDs are happy to give advice and support to those interested taking part and we encourage you all to enter.
