British BIDs (Bb), which this year celebrates a decade of leading the BID industry, has formed a new Advisory Board to help support its own development and that of the wider industry. The Board is made up of industry leaders, national BID voters, stakeholders, property developers and an observer position has been accepted by the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG).
The new Advisory Board is to be Chaired by Nic Durston, Chief Executive of South Bank Employers’ Group (SBEG) and the South Bank BID, He is joined by other industry leaders, all with over 10 years’ experience and a strong record of being part of successful BIDs and places. Other members of the Board are Sharon Appleby (Sunderland BID), John Hirst (Destination Bristol), Marc Myers (Landsec), Maria Manion (Watford BID), Steve Sawyer (Manor Royal BID), Patricia Bench (Hammersmith BID), Ian Sandison (Cambridge BID), Katrina Mackay (Savills), Ian Hayes (Tesco Stores) and Graeme Cormack (Boots).
Following the first meeting of the new Advisory Board, held in London on 5th March, Nic Durston said “as places adapt, BIDs will become an increasingly important vehicle in driving change, but we also need to be mindful of the challenges currently within our industry. We have formed the strongest possible Board, representing all aspects of BIDs, and we aim to provide leadership both to Bb and the industry more widely. The Board will drive the future success of Bb through data, insight, levy payer and member feedback, and always with an eye on future policy needs.”
Professor Chris Turner, Chief Executive of Bb, said “the Board will be invaluable in leading the work of Bb, steering its future growth, and providing leadership and policy advice to the wider industry. We have recently announced significant projected growth for Bb this year, including a new Conference setting at The Leadenhall Building, the launch of a new Diploma in BID Leadership, and a new suite of training courses. Our members remain our absolute priority and, in a rapidly changing landscape, the Board will help bring us even closer to the views within the industry, as well as providing advice on our future strategy.”
Editors’ notes:
Nic Durston has over 30 years of place-based experience which spans urban regeneration, community engagement, BIDs, conservation, economic and neighbourhood renewal, heritage and the natural environment, and sustainability. SBEG founded South Bank BID and acts as its delivery agent, working with the BID Board and levy payers to achieve a clear vision for South Bank. SBEG also helped to create South Bank Partnership - which brings together SBEG members, the BID, local government, and representatives of the Greater London Authority family - and to produce the South Bank Manifesto, a powerful statement of the shared priorities of the area, endorsed and supported by the South Bank’s two Members of Parliament. In 2019, he led South Bank BID through its first renewal ballot which achieved 99% in favour of renewal both by number and rateable value.
