Business Park and Industrial BIDs met online last month for the sixth time since May to share good practice and learn new tips on how to prevent and detect crime through a useful presentation given by representatives of the Business Crime Partnership (BCP).
The group, chaired by Steve Sawyer who manages Manor Royal BID near Gatwick Airport, and who is also on the British BIDs Advisory Board, has been regularly attended by around 20 representatives from across the UK since it started as a way of ensuring the needs of Industrial BIDs were considered during the pandemic.
Levy collection, future policy and smart ideas on dealing with issues from illegal encampments to challenging residential development in industrial areas have all been aired through the virtual forums.
Their recent meeting was attended by Pete Fisher, Business Crime Manager at BCP who gave top tips on crime and anti-social behaviour issues including how to deal with fly tipping on public and private land, a common issue on industrial estates.
Steve Sawyer, Executive Director of Manor Royal BID said: “Whilst our business parks are economically vibrant, they are usually located in isolated areas on the edge of City Centres and can be vulnerable to criminals. Sharing tips on how to detect and prevent crime is key for Industrial BIDs most of whom operate either a CCTV system or security patrols".
The group intends to meet four times every year virtually with one physical meeting to be hosted by an Industrial BID member. The virtual meetings will be themed and cover areas such as marketing, policy and ‘surgeries’ where BID members can share a problem with the group and members collectively provide suggestions on how to solve it.
Amanda Holliday from Penrith Industrial BID joined British BIDs following attendance at some of the early networking sessions. She said "Following the discussion about levy collection at the Industrial BIDs networking session, Penrith Industrial BID sent out levy bills accompanied by good communications. I am delighted to say we have currently collected 80% of our levy. If there is one good thing to come out of this year, it has sharpened our communication and the need for us all to work collaboratively which is what the new networking group for Industrial BIDs is all about."
Chris Turner, Chief Executive of British BIDs said, "It’s great that industrial BIDs have gained so much from networking and collaborating. Around 10% of all our BIDs are based on business parks or industrial areas so they are an important part of our BID network and we value their views and insights which will help to influence future policy".
The next meeting will take place via zoom on Thursday 4th February at 2pm and will be an open ‘surgery’ session.
