June has been busy for ballots and we congratulate Lowestoft and Essential Edinburgh, who were successful in their recent renewal ballot. Sadly, Shirley were not successful. At the end of the month there are six further ballots; renewals in Liverpool, Weymouth, Dorchester and ballots for new bids in Colchester, Saffron Walden and Colne. We will celebrate these results in our Ballotwatch service coming out each Monday.
A key task has been responding to the House of Commons Select Committee on Housing,Communities and Local Government (HCLG) looking at the future of England’s high streets and towns in 2030. A number of BIDs responded to our request last month, many in much detail, and I have integrated their comments into our response. We will make it available to members on our web site once the Select Committee has given approval.
Many of you will have read the powerful review of the High Street that Bill Grimsey undertook five years ago. He and his team have been working on a second edition, to which we contributed both data and BID experiences, which is being launched on July 4 in Birmingham. Again, we shall make it available to members once the launch is complete.
The British BIDs National BID survey has become a key tool used by a whole range of organisations, and we are clearly pleased that it is used so much. The deeper questions in the survey are particularly useful to many and the survey closes at the end of the month. Do please complete the survey by 30th June by clicking here. Colleagues from British BIDs are contacting all those BIDs which have not yet responded and we would be grateful if you could help the BID community by completing it.
The World Towns Leadership summit took place in Berlin over two days this week. Some vital topics were discussed on BIDs as a worldwide phenomenon that will be brought to our national Conference in Cambridge on November 8. One key piece of data that was the figure of 790 million euros a year spent by the German government on urban support and development on issues such as high street vacancies and the like.
The latest cohort of the Certificate in BID Management completed their programme last week, and will receive their certificates at Cambridge in November. A new programme is starting next week and they will also be able to collect their awards in Cambridge.
The National BIDs advisory board meets in Manchester on July 5. It is an informal group that brings together, on a regular basis the different Business Improvement District communities – a cross section of national levy payers, a range of BIDs, and a local authority. Each meeting brings others to the table and if you have an interest do please get in touch. This meeting is looking at Grimsey, the House of Commons review, outcomes of the loan fund allocations, accreditation and an update from BID events across the country.
