A Happy New Year to you all and I hope your year has started with zest and enthusiasm. We are in a complex world, with the European Union outcome yet to resolve itself and thus much government business on hold and a very difficult Christmas period for some of our major retailers. Nonetheless we press on in the BID community as there is much to be done. Footfall was most certainly in decline on the high street over Christmas, as it has been over many months, but some retailers performed well and those town centres which explored experiences and excitement managed to perform better than expected. British BID events and development days will continue to focus on how this can be widened across the community.
Our Professional Development Day on April 11 will study at a micro-level the options and possibilities in a BID that is working creatively with a local authority and national retailers in Watford to produce a real sense of place management. Details are available here.
January is traditionally quiet in the world of BID ballots, and this one is no different. Last month five BIDs: Letchworth, Harrow, Garratt Business Park, Hitchin and Falmouth were all successful in renewing their terms. This month, Twickenham and Skipton are in ballot; we will be sharing their results next month and a further five ballots are taking place in February and March. As ever full details are available in Ballot Watch and on our website.
The last few weeks has been a key time for strategy and policy on high streets and BIDs with the report from John Timpson. This report contains the recommendations of the High Streets Expert Panel which was established by the High Streets Minister Jake Berry MP in July 2018. The panel, chaired by Sir John Timpson, covered 3 areas: the Town Centre Task Force; the Future High Streets Fund; and short term measures to help high streets and town centres. One vital outcome is the new £675 million Future High Street fund which has to receive the first expressions of interest by March 22 and BIDs will have to be involved by way of proof of engagement. We know that many BIDs will be centrally involved in this and Bb will clearly be advising members on how best to engage. An email or phone call to me will allow us to gather and join experiences and knowledge.
The first 2019 semester of the Certificate in BID Management starts on February 12 and will finish on June 13 and we welcome a full cohort. The second Semester will start in June and if people would like to join this second semester do please email drew.turner@britishbids.info.
The Bb team are increasingly working with individual BIDs on a wide range of very specific issues – challenged ballots, levy collection issues, board operation and company formation etc. Whilst much of this work is clearly confidential, we believe that there is much to share and we will thus be continuing our series of policy and guidance notes to join the dozen already produced and available on our website to members.
