BID INSIGHT FROM CHRIS TURNER - APRIL

It has been an interesting four weeks for ballots, with successes in both Leamington and Warrington, but failures in both Bedminster and Morpeth. It will be for the industry to try to analyse the reasons for the unsuccessful ballots and try and learn.

We are look forward to the results of the three developing new BIDs in Clevedon, Minehead and Penrith (Industrial) later this month and then the Essential Edinburgh and Lowestoft renewal ballots next month.

The Bb Professional Development Day in Bristol was a great event, with 65 people. We kindly ask for your feedback on this here. We had BID focussed presentations on small scale investigations, GDPR for BIDs, the Governance of BIDs and presentations about what is happening and what is important in the three regional groupings in the South, the South West and South Wales. This was followed by four walking tours around the BIDs in Bristol. This blending of some theory and then real operational observation gave us all some interesting insights, some shared collegiality and a great sense of the BID community and how it works so well. Our thanks to the Bristol BIDs for their work on helping with this. Have a look at the day's photos here.

At the Professional Development Day, we showcased our new website; refreshed and more member focused and formally launched our new Bb service Ballot Buddy. This will provide remote, expert technical guidance throughout the process for places with established teams who might want a helping hand on the whole process; we will provide a comprehensive timeline, templates of every document you will require along with good examples that we know have been successful. We will provide an experienced BID manager who will guide you through each aspect of BID development, ensuring that you take the correct steps. Contact me or the Bb team for more information.

As you will know the 12th National BID Survey started last week and we will be collecting data online through to the end of June, in order to produce the annual review for the National BID Conference on November 8th in Cambridge. I do know that completing surveys is a bore, but this dataset is now becoming increasingly vital for government and our own boards and levy payers as BIDs become more and more part of the business investment and self-help agenda that we all need to embrace in these less easy times. Do please submit your response here. We will be in touch about the survey over the next two months.

We have spoken before about the new National Business Crime Centre. After a fair amount of consultation, the Common Standards for Business Crime Reduction Partnerships, for auditing and approving Business Crime Centre Partnerships, are finalised and will be available soon. I am interested in getting a small group of Bb members together to work through the best ways of operationalising these new standards for those of us who run Business Crime Reduction Partnerships. If you would like to join such a group do please email me and we will get a meeting organised.

And finally, those of you who attended the Professional Development Day will already be familiar that bookings are now open for the National BIDs Conference. We’re delighted to share that David Downey, CEO of International Downtown Association will be speaking. Our full line-up of speakers will be announced soon but please be mindful that there are a limited number of tickets so please do ensure you save the date and book as soon as you can.
