I recently had the pleasure of catching up with Lucy Stanford and Carla Jones, the BID Managers for Nottingham and Newquay respectively, for the latest British BIDs podcast recording.
The topic of discussion was ‘BID Ballots during lockdown’, with both Lucy and Carla steering their BIDs to convincing successes in the latter part of 2020 whilst lockdown measures were in place.
So, what were the key pieces of advice and lessons learned from our experts? The first was that data is key. Accurate information on your stakeholders, who needs to receive the ballot paper and where it needs to be delivered is crucial, particularly when businesses are not fully operational or in many instances not able to open at all. Being prepared and having accurate data is a prerequisite for any BID at any ballot but the obstacles that a lockdown ballot provides intensifies the need for this further.
Other key messages were the importance of communicating effectively with the Local Authority in the lead up to and during the ballot. A critical relationship and the more closely aligned the two bodies are throughout the process the better. This strength of this relationship has seen successes continue in many instances into 2021.
Finally, allowing yourself to be flexible with how you deliver your comms to you audience. Both Lucy and Carla had to frequently adapt their best laid plans on how they would be engaging with their voters. This included the platforms they used and the narrative of their comms.
You can hear more details on achieving a successful lockdown ballot in this month's episode of The British BIDs Podcast. Which you can listen to on the usual channels such as Apple and Spotify.
