Bb joins national campaign to encourage workers back to offices

Return to the office

British BIDs is working with a whole range of our members on restarting their economies. We know that the past few months have been incredibly difficult for everyone but slowly cases of COVID have continued to fall in most of the country. In many BID areas, for those businesses that have opened, trade has been above national averages. Local residents have shown confidence to return to all of our town and city centres. Finally, there are reasons to feel more positive.

However, the numbers of people in the town and city centre are still only averaging two-thirds of those we were seeing before this terrible virus came upon us. That means, that, despite the work that BIDs and their partners have undertaken, many businesses are trading at a level that, in the long term, could prove unsustainable. Hence, we all remain fearful for the long-term future of many. The crucial element is the return of all those who normally work every day in town and city centres who habitually use all aspects of its economy - shops, restaurants, cafes, bars and so on.

We know that our town and city centre economies can only thrive through each business and its staff supporting the others. We all have our role to play. Successful town and city centres impact upon the livelihoods and futures of every citizen. It is their town centre and they cannot afford for it to be lost or diminished; without a thriving town centre, they would all be enormously disadvantaged.

We know that the health and safety of staff is of paramount importance to all employers, but we believe that it is vital that the moment they feel it appropriate and safe they bring their full workforce back to their offices in town. Their absence is the difference between businesses riding out this storm or succumbing to it. This terrible virus has already caused too much hurt and anguish and has taken too many from us.

BIDs have shown that the town and city centres can be safe and secure, and BIDs have worked with partners and businesses to put in the right measures to reassure everyone. Now businesses, many of whom have been arguably worst affected, want and need to welcome back the workforce in each town. We need to encourage all employees to return to their offices, with the reassurance that they can enjoy their town and city centre economies and all that they have to offer. We know that other businesses are now desperately relying on this full return and that the future success of all our town and city centres is dependent upon their ability to welcome back staff.

We know that some BIDS have written to their levy payers stressing this, and we are now suggesting that all BIDs make sure that all of their levy payers understand that they all need each other’s help to rebound and rebuild from this crisis. If you want to write or to email your levy payers there is a template here that you could use.
