Amazon, the world’s biggest online retailer is back in the headlines today, reporting its net sales rising by 44pc to $108.5 billion in Q1 2021. It’s far from gloomy for our high streets however as newly reopened pubs and restaurants this month sold twice as many drinks as they did before the pandemic struck. High street businesses are also better embracing the power of digital and we are seeing some great local e-commerce solutions such as Click it Local launch in areas across the UK to support our local economies.
We’re pleased that the government is sticking to the roadmap, it’s providing businesses with the confidence they need to plan ahead and rebuild. Now we need to get on with reforming business rates.
High street businesses may never beat Amazon on price, but people will come to them for the service, the touch, look and feel, the experience. Our conversations with BIDs up and down the country show we are building on this experience be it through drive-in movies, outdoor dining, cycle deliveries or deep cleaning. (Remember you can listen to their incredible stories on our industry podcast ‘The British BIDs Podcast’ available in all the usual places).
Now the government must help by lowering costs locally for our hard-hit high streets. We must reform our outdated business rates model once and for all.
