Role Summary

Milton Keynes City Centre has so much to shout about. It’s retail and leisure offer attract visitors from as far north as Birmingham, east as Cambridge, west as Oxford and south as Hemel Hempstead. It has an extensive food & beverage offer, one of the largest theatres outside of London and a thriving business sector. By 2050, Milton Keynes is predicted to have a population of around 410,000 people, many of them living in the city centre, and with many more people beyond that using it as their place of work.

MyMiltonKeynes Business Improvement District (BID) has created the exciting new position of ‘Marketing Director’ to lead the BID’s marketing activities - creating, developing and implementing a strategic marketing plan to collectively promote the whole city centre offer. The post-holder will be responsible for the creation of a new place marketing website, working with key partners in the city centre and delivering marketing campaigns that will showcase the city centre’s extensive offer, reminding MK residents how great the city centre is, those in the catchment area why they should come here, companies why they should locate here, and commuters why they should both stay in the city centre longer and consider moving here.

The post-holder will oversee the company’s corporate communications to BID levy-paying businesses; local stakeholders and partners; and with all media channels. Reporting to the Chief Executive, the post-holder will be part of the senior management team, responsible to the Board of Directors to assure the BID’s accountability to all levy payers and ensuring its effective operation.


Key Responsibilities

Marketing / brand strategy:

  • To create, implement and measure the success of: a comprehensive multi-platform marketing, communications and public relations program that will promote Milton Keynes City Centre and enhance the BID’s image and position within the business community and with key stakeholders.
  • To develop a place marketing brand for Milton Keynes City Centre that will be used for the BIDs consumer marketing, including the development of a new place marketing website and the introduction of a city centre gift card.
  • To develop the BIDs own corporate brand and communications strategy and ensure that levy payers understand that the BID brand and the place marketing brand are aligned. And ensure levy payers are communicated with regularly, in person as well as by email.
  • To direct marketing spend on activities that have a demonstrable return on investment. Ensure that evaluation systems are in place related to these goals and objectives and report progress to the Chief Executive and Board.
  • To monitor and track best practice nationally, identifying areas of opportunity for the business and feed into decision-making and strategy.

Leadership and collaboration:

  • To develop and lead a city centre marketing steering group, made up of key stakeholders, to develop and co-ordinate innovative campaigns and share information.
  • To manage, motivate and support the BID’s marketing manager, allowing her to flourish and continue to build the successful relationships she’s made and achieve personal successes.
  • To build a positive, mutually beneficial relationship with Destination Milton Keynes, the city’s DMO.
  • To attend and participate in city centre projects that are relevant to the aims and objectives of the BID.

Communication and Relationships:

  • To maintain overall responsibility for all communication tools, including print, website and digital activities.
  • To manage relationships with external agencies / contractors used to deliver marketing activities.
  • To coordinate media interest in the BID and ensure regular positive contact with target media and appropriate response to media requests and develop wider networks to pursue joint marketing initiatives.
  • To report to the BID Board at quarterly board meetings: monitoring and evaluating campaigns and activities against strategic goals.
  • To develop relationships with key stakeholders, ensure the BIDs database is kept up to date and to oversee GDPR compliance.
  • To maintain a working environment that attracts, retains and motivates top quality personnel, both paid and volunteer.

Person Specifications

This role would suit an ambitious, experienced marketing manager ready to step up into the role of a marketing director but still willing to be hands-on and deliver marketing activities. Someone with an agency background is welcomed. Place management experience is desirable, but not essential. We are a small team at MyMiltonKeynes BID, with a strong ethos to succeed and add value to our levy payers. It is essential that the person we recruit is a team player, who is enthusiastic and motivated by success.

Desirable experience:

  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in a marketing role.
  • Experience of successfully developing and implementing an organisation’s strategic marketing plan, and annual work plans.
  • Experience of monitoring and effectively evaluating campaigns and activities against strategic goals.
  • Proven track record at delivering successful social media campaigns, using video content and tapping into current trends.
  • Experience of effectively using influencers to increase reach and engagement.
  • Experience of developing and managing websites
  • Understanding of brands and how to build and grow new brands
  • Experience of effective budgeting and financial management
  • Experience of management of creative / digital agencies
  • A good working knowledge of the factors that affect the economic vibrancy of a major city.

Skills:

  • Ability to write creatively, with excellent grammar
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the confidence to liaise with a wide group of public and private sectors
  • Good eye for design and attention to detail
  • Excellent IT and web-based skills with high level of competence of digital channels
  • Excellent time management skills with the ability to prioritise a varied and diverse workload and to work independently and empower their team to manage their own work.
